PA Official: Palestinian Hands Contributed to Arafat’s Death

A former Palestinian Authority intelligence chief is confident that a Palestinian contributed to the death of PLO chairman Yasser Arafat according to a news report today from the Palestine Press.

“We are sure that there is Palestinian hands who contributed to the disposal of President Yasser Arafat and our task now is to see these hands,” said Major General Tawfiq Tirawi, head of the PA’s investigation into Arafat’s death.

If the killer is revealed, Major General Tirawi threatened to punish the culprit with fatal consequences. “No matter how important the hand and the person who helped in the poisoning of President Arafat, he will be subject to harsher penalties and would be doomed to death.” Tirawi warned.

Back in April, the blog Challah Hu Akbar reported that current Fatah chairman Mahmoud Abbas pushed for Tiwari to be investigated in an attempt to remove him from his position as the chief of intelligence of the board of the Palestinian Academy for Security Sciences. Previously in 2008, Abbas fired Tiwari from his position as the director of the Palestinian Authority General Intelligence Services, a move which was praised by Hamas, as one official explained that Tiwari was ”responsible for security coordination with the Israelis” as well as being “behind the brutal measures against Hamas [in the West Bank].”

Tiwari is also the cousin of Jamal Tawari, who in 2007 was convicted for his involvement in the suicide bombing at the Bialik Café in Tel Aviv in 2002 which killed one Israeli woman and injured 29 others.
